Beginner’s Guide to YouTube Ads

Getting started with YouTube video ads

More than just a social network, YouTube is the second-largest search engine in the world. And YouTube users are searching, not just scrolling, giving you the opportunity to find a high-intent audience for your business. That’s why we created this guide—to help you learn not just the basics of using YouTube ads, but to show you how to create quick, effective video ads that hook customers and keep them watching. But first things first: before you begin cranking out those eye-catching videos, it’s a good idea to have your ad strategy in mind. Here’s a quick checklist to help you get your YouTube account set up to start creating YouTube ad campaigns.

  • Create a YouTube channel. If you haven’t already, set up a YouTube channel for your business.
  • Start with Google AdWords: If you don’t have an account yet, you can set up one up at Google AdWords. Already have an AdWords account? Head to their video page to create your new ad campaign.
  • Link AdWords to YouTube. Go to “Linked YouTube accounts” to make sure your YouTube page and your AdWords accounts are connected.

Tips for Creating YouTube Videos for Your Business

Before we get into how to get your video ad on YouTube or even the type of ad you should create, let’s cover the basics of what YouTube recommends when you’re creating a video for their platform.

3 Types of YouTube Ad Formats

Now, with best practices in mind, it’s time to consider the types of videos you want to create for your YouTube advertising campaign. There are 3 basic types of YouTube video ads. And together with experts from YouTube and Google, Animoto created three YouTube storyboard templates that match each of those ad types.

Pro Tip

Not sure where to start? Try a skippable TrueView ad. Studies have show that viewers who choose to watch an ad are 75% more engaged than those who are forced to do so.

These ads are designed so that you can use them separately or all together to create one large ad campaign—whichever fits your needs. To find them, choose the “Attract an Audience” tab when creating an Animoto marketing video project. You’ll find all 3 storyboards created together with SmartStop Self Storage, using videos from their successful YouTube ad campaign.

Choose the storyboard you want, then just drag and drop your video clips and images into the storyboard, adjust colors and text, add your logo, and more in just minutes.
