2016 is coming to a close and there’s no better way to make sure the memories live on than by creating a year in review recap video to save for yourself – and share with your friends on Facebook! Animoto makes it easy to create a personalized video that showcases all the 2016 moments that mattered the most to you. Here’s how:

Step 1: Log in to Animoto

First things first, you’ll need to log in. If you aren’t already using Animoto, you can find more information here.

Step 2: Select a video style

After logging in, click on the Create button to get started. If you’re a Proffesional or Business subscriber, select “Slideshow Video” to get into our Slideshow Video Builder. Once you’re in, choose your style. For my year in review video, I’m using our newest slideshow video style, Merry Memories, because I’m feelin’ the holiday spirit and this is doubling as my “Happy holidays!” video, but we’ve got over 100 styles to choose from. You can sort styles by a variety of Personal, Business, Education, and Photography categories.

Step 3: Add photos and video clips

Here comes the fun part – deciding which 2016 memories you’d like to include and adding photos and video clips of them. Click on “Add pics & vids” in the left side navigation bar. You’ll have the option to import files from your computer or from a variety of sources, including Facebook, Instagram, Dropbox, Flickr, and SmugMug.

When it comes to finding your most important moments of 2016, we think that Facebook and Instagram are great places to start – after all, most of us share our favorite events and milestones on these platforms with friends and family throughout the year. Note: You don’t have to add pictures and videos from one place only — just keep selecting “Add pics & vids” until you’ve added photos and videos from every place you’d like.

In the screenshot below, I selected Instagram. You can hold down “command” on your keyboard to select as many items as you’d like. The ones with grey backgrounds are video clips, the ones with white backgrounds are images.

Step 4: Create your story

Now that you’ve got all your photos and video clips in an Animoto project, it’s time to use them to tell a story. You can click and drag the image and video blocks around to put them in order. You might decide to put them in the order they happened in the year, or organize them by theme. For instance, in my video I’ve grouped together all the pictures and video clips of my dog in one spot, even though I took them all throughout the year.

Once you’ve got your photos and video clips in order, it’s time to add titles and captions to help tell the story of your year. You can click on “Add text” in the menu on the left to add a title card or hover over an image and click to add a caption to it.

You’ll also want to select a song that captures the spirit of your year. Need a little help? Check out our blog post on finding the best song for your video. Note that you can also upload your own song, as long as you’ve got the rights to use it.

Step 5: Preview & produce your video

Once you’ve got your video ready to go, click on PREVIEW VIDEO to see it in action and then PRODUCE to finish up. Don’t forget to add a title, date, and description. This’ll show up on your Animoto play page and also make it easier to find your video in your account down the road.

Step 6: Don’t forget to share!

Now comes the most important part – sharing your video! After all, isn’t that why you made it? Once your video is ready to go, just head over to the play page and click on the Facebook button under “SHARE.”

A popup window will open where you can indicate whether you want to share to your personal timeline or to a Facebook page you manage. Make your selection, add a description that’ll post along with your video, and click the POST button. The video will upload directly to Facebook where it’ll play natively in your friends’ or fans’ News Feeds. It might take a few minutes, but you’ll get a notification on Facebook when it’s ready to watch.
