VoiceOver 300x225 How to Create a Voice Over Video

Being able to tell your story is a powerful way to promote your business.

Here’s how to create a voice-over to use as the soundtrack on an Animoto video.

Every Animoto video requires you choose a soundtrack to accompany the photos, video clips and words that come together to create you video. Typically, you’ll choose a song from our music library to go with your creation.

But for this customer testimonial for Earthlogs, I really needed to tell the story with the audio track. I used Animoto Pro because I wanted full length and a link to the business website at the end. You can use voice-overs for all kinds of business videos.

Here are the steps:

1. Creatively build your video

Choose your images and video clips; add words and even pick music you think would make good background music. You will use this in the background so choose wisely. Make sure your video tells a story and keep it tight: no one likes watching long, slow videos.

2. Click Preview and review the flow

I went through a few cycles of making sure the flow worked well. Then I started making speaking notes based on the pace of the video. If it was hard to talk, I made adjustments; if images came up too fast, I slowed it down.

3. Record the audio

I used Voice Memo on my iPhone. I literally set it on my desk between me and the computer speakers and I speak into it while I play the music in the background. I do a few sound tests to make sure the background music is at a good level and my voice isn’t too loud.

Here’s the big trick: keep your video in preview mode and run the video while you speak your recording. You will have to practice to match your timing to images. Don’t be afraid to be quiet for a moment if you need the images to catch up. In my video above, you’ll hear me do that at one point. Don’t drive for precision – that will be difficult – use word slides to help you make transitions with a little space so perfect alignment isn’t required.

4. Convert to MP3

I email the voice memo to myself and save the file. Then I use an app on my computer called AVS Audio Converter. You can also do it with iTunes; here are the instructions.

5. Upload the track to your Animoto video

Make sure you click out of Preview and keep editing. Go to Add Music and upload your MP3 file. It will be the new soundtrack for your Animoto video. Preview to make sure it’s to your liking and when you are happy, hit produce!
