First-person interviews let your customers do the work for you.
Sometimes the best advocates for your business are the people who use it! Putting a human face on your marketing efforts has never been so easy.
I created this video at the 40th Anniversary celebration for the Santa Cruz County Second Harvest Food Bank. The Bank recently moved into their new facility and many people were touring the building. Volunteers continued to work because there were still people waiting to receive shipments that day. The party was well-attended, with a lot of energy and excitement.
I knew I wanted to make a video to show off the new facility, share a little about the kinds of people working there, and share some testimonials that explained the importance and value of the organization’s hard work.
Make a Plan
I knew I needed:
- Proof of what the food bank does
- Photos of people doing their jobs
- Photos of food!
- “Factoids”–these ended up being signs around the building.
I asked folks for permission to film while we went through the tour, and I captured all the photos and video on my iPhone 4GS.
Create the video
Once I had my assets together, I imported everything and started to pull together the story. What you see in the video doesn’t exactly match the chronology of the day; I liked putting the CEO video with the volunteer content since the CEO has been a volunteer for years. I loved ending with the agency volunteer who speaks so clearly about the people he’s able to serve thanks to the food bank.

In just our small community, the bank distributes 8.4 million pounds of food annually through 200 local agencies and programs. Amazing!
